We’ve all been there. Whether tasked with a demo to clients, or an internal company presentation, everyone has experienced Powerpoints that are hard to follow, way too long, delivered badly, delivering from a pile of notes, or literally reading every word on the screen like a script. The cliché of ‘death by PowerPoint’ should be well behind us now, but it’s often not as easy as that.
Presenting in a virtual environment requires additional skills compared to in-person methodology. In addition to the challenges of engaging an audience and finding the balance between using visual aids and delivering quality content, virtual platforms (both in the technology and the format) contribute to presenters sometimes lacking belief and confidence.
Regardless of the content, audiences in all virtual training and presentations are the same. They want to be free from concern and to feel they’re in safe hands, whether in a meeting room, or a zoom call. They want to know the presenter is with them, taking them through the content at the right pace, provoking thought and interest.
The world has changed significantly in 2020, and business meetings and presentations are now taking place online, virtually. And so many businesses are finding that presentations are inconsistent in their delivery and outcomes. Managers with responsibility for recruitment are seeing a vast range of styles in virtual presentation approaches and often aren’t equipped to evaluate what a good presentation should entail.
Here are 4 informative tips to help your team become dynamic virtual presenters:
1. Ensure your presentation is the best it can be
Practice your presentation at least once. Do your slides look appealing? Check. Maximum of 3 points on each page? Check. But are you going to make up for the lack of text, by talking too much around each slide?
2. Maintain eye contact
Move the virtual audience images closer to where your webcam is, or if you can, look directly at the camera as much as possible. Eye contact is how audiences know we are involved and this presentation is aimed at them.
3. Be aware of body language
Engage your audience with your enthusiastic body language. Remember to project yourself, use hand gestures, enjoy the interaction and add humour wherever you can, to relax yourself and your audience. React to others contributions positively by nodding and remember to smile.
4. Make the most of the platform functionality
Use all the interactive tools at your disposal. Webinars are often perceived as potentially dull lectures and yet presentations can and should be interactive. A well designed and delivered presentation can benefit from audience contributions throughout, and not just in a Q&A at the end.
